Thomas Nast’s political cartoons were the first to depict the republican and democratic parties as animals.
The text at the bottom of the cartoon reads:
“stranger things have happened, hold on, and you may walk over the sluggish animal of them yet.”
The cartoon displays the Republican party as lazy, taking a nap, while the Democrats are out of control.
This woven piece is a recontextualization of one of his political cartoons. By appropriating this image, I comment on how we are a country divided, and how history has repeated itself time and time again with financial chaos.
